The Southeast Branch of the Texas Chapter of the American Public

Jillian has been a member of APWA since 2007, and since joining,
she has been extremely active. She is currently the

design engineer for water treatment facilities and pipelines
group. Jillian graduated from the University of Nevada with a
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on
environmental engineering.

Southeast Branch and Five Other
Professional Societies
Sponsor Event for City of Houston Run-Off
Candidates
On November 17, 2009, six
engineering professional societies sponsored an event where the
run-off candidates for the Mayor of the City of Houston and the
Houston City Council At-Large Position 1 Candidates were invited
speak to the engineering community. Mayoral Candidates Gene
Locke and Annise Parker and At-Large Position 1 Candidate
Stephen Costello spoke to the group about their platforms and
the runoff election to be held December 12th. The
event was held at the Houston Engineering and Scientific Society
(HESS) Club, and approximately 150 people attended.
Each candidate was introduced by a
representative from one of the societies. Attendees had the
opportunity to hear the candidates’ positions on local issues
and to ask questions of each candidate. Questions ranged from
concerns about funding the Houston Police Department to the
potential drainage fee to investment in the City’s
infrastructure. Stephen Costello, P.E. is a Civil Engineer and
owns a 110-person firm in Houston, so his speech was
particularly effective for this group.
The
professional societies that sponsored the event included:
-
The
Southeast Branch of the Texas Public Works Association
(TPWA)
-
The
Houston Area Section of the Texas Institute of
Transportation Engineers (TexITE)
-
The
Houston Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
-
The
Houston Chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS)
International
-
The
Houston Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
-
The
Houston/Galveston Post of the Society of American Military
Engineers (SAME)
The Southeast Branch of TPWA was
particularly excited to be involved in this event with the other
societies. The future of the City of Houston will change based
on the upcoming elections, and the entire engineering community
will be affected by the choices made by the voters whether they
live in the City of Houston or the surrounding areas. Providing
opportunities to allow the Southeast Branch members to meet and
question political candidates is just another advantage to our
members!
